Survey Results

Survey

Online survey- Majority of respondents of the online survey were female which suggests that we should try to make our magazine appeal to both men and women meaning that the magazine can attract a wider audience.

The ages of participants filling in the survey were from 13 and upwards. Indie rock is listened to by a wide range of ages. This helps draw in a wider audience. The magazine will focus more on the younger generation as many Indie rock bands are new and contemporary which is generally associated with teenagers and young adults.

The respondents seemed to engage with the concept of articles on bands and artists that are new and upcoming which means our magazine would be contemporary and unique so readers can explore the latest music and find out tour dates etc. The participants also want a bold and eye-catching colour scheme and images of bands and artists, this would be captivating and draw in a suited audience for the genre of music while introducing something different to others who aren’t so familiar to the genre.

From the results it is evident that the audience would like 4 or more pictures of the artist/band being interviewed. The audience would feel they would benefit from a good amount of writing as they want to engage with the new upcoming band.

The most popular font for our magazine picked was Cambria Bold, we will think about using this font in our magazine. However majority of our survey results showed that Arial was a popular font, therefore we will take that into consideration. We will also think about incorporating a stylish and artistic font as it will fit the image and genre of our magazine.

Creating a paper survey allowed the questionnaire to be accessible to those who do not have immediate access to a computer.  The paper questionnaire features the same questions as previously asked and were returned with similar results.

Uses and Gratification Theory

Uses and gratification theory

This is the theory of how people use media for their needs and what people do with media rather than what media does to people.  There are five categories; cognitive needs, affective needs, personal integrative needs, social integrative needs and tension free needs.

Cognitive needs
People use the media to gain knowledge, particularly on the Internet, browsing for any topic.

Affective needs
People use the media for their emotional needs, for example a romantic or sad scene may make people cry.

Personal integrative needs
People use the media to reassure themselves and boost their self-esteem.

Social integrative needs
People use media to socialize with family and friends and the rest of society.

Tension free needs
People use the media to escape from reality and to free themselves from tension, it is a form of relaxing.

Media effects are beneficial because they fulfil the audience’s needs.

The Information on the contents page is clear and the audience is able to see page references and what content is featured in the magazine. The page is presented nicely with a main picture of the focal point of the magazine.
There is a page specifically to inform the audience about gigs which helps to engage and involve the magazine.
The magazine would be good for those who are passionate about music to gain a deeper level of knowledge, therefore this magazine would appeal to them.
The magazine is heavy with articles and news to entertain the reader.
